Xnote : adding notes to messages in thunderbird

Some weeks ago, we (StarXpert) released a new Add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird called Xnote. This Add-on allows adding notes to a message. For example, if you have specific infos about a mail but would like to answer to it later, you can just store the infos directy with the mail by adding a note. Features :

  • Add notes to messages

  • highlight messages with notes
  • Resizable notes
  • Translated into French
  • Xnote is licenced under LGPL

You can download XNote on : http://www.starxpert.fr/staroffice/ressources.htm#xnote

or directly : http://www.starxpert.fr/outils/XNote

And if you have some time, we would appreciate feedbacks. PS : if many of you ask for it (let's say more than 10), we could take some time to translate XNote to English or other languages.

  • This is GREAT. Neatly complements the Internote extension I use routinely in Firefox. Would be nice to have a central "manager" so if we deleted mail with xnotes, we can clean up using the manager (folks may want their notes to outlive messages). Another wishful idea is if the containing folder can be coloured when collapsed - just like it is flagged if there's an unread mail.

  • I won't have the time to port this Extension to thunderbird 2, but if someone does the job, I would be glad to update it.

  • Just changing the maxVersion option in install.rdf to 2.0.* worked for me. I didn't notice any problems with it yet, so I guess it will just work as it did with previous versions.

  • In fact, it works only partly, but you will no more see the tags on messages with a message.

XNote uses TAGS, and tags changed drastically with Tb 2.0. It requires some work to adapt it, and I won't have time to, but I would welcome patches.

  • I just tried the trick GORby mentioned, and it worked fine. I can't see that there's a note on one mail when I look at the list of mails, but when I click on the mail the yellow note is shown.

Works well enough to use imho :)

  • I will give money to a charity of your choice if anyone ports this to 2.0

  • Camalot, please send the money to the charity you think will do the best job.

I will post XNote for Thunderbird 2.0 today.

Thanks again for your patience and for using XNote.

  • I have been looking for an extension like this for a long time and I'm really glad that you wrote it and that I've found it.

If you ask fo some ideas of improvement, I'd think date- and timestamps for creation and possibly later added updates would be great.

  • Is this something that could be easily adjusted to allow creating a folder full of notes rather than attaching notes to emails?

  • Finally, this helpful extension is becoming popular. Tough, under Mac OS X the message window does not pop up automatically (June, 2008)
